A very old variety, which in times gone by used to be widespread throughout the Iberian Peninsula Currently, it is the second white variety in the Ribeiro area, with a minority presence in the Rías Baixas and Ribeira Sacra areas.
The grape is small, making the clusters very tight. This variety emerges early, owing to which it is sensitive to the spring frosts in the Ribeiro area. It has a short ripening cycle. A highly productive variety, sensitive to mildew and oidium, and highly sensitive to botrytis.
The wines it produces are highly aromatic and unique, with tones that are predominantly fruity and floral. The torrentés grape is highly refined and requires the support of other noble, structured varieties to guarantee its conservation. Accordingly, it is usually used to lend complexity to the different blends, there being few single-varietal wines with this grape. It blends well with treixadura and lado.
